The Robert Frost poem about the two roads diverging in the woods has long been a refrain for my life. I was equally drawn to art and foreign languages in school, but chose to go down the road to teach German and French for 33 years. I got to travel widely, do exchanges with families in Germany, coach the boys soccer team for 4 years, wrestle once, direct an operetta and lots of one act plays in German, and interact with some outstanding young people and their families. However I never lost my interest in art or the need to express myself visually. I painted fabrics, murals at my beach house and lots of t-shirts.

I needed to challenge myself and brush up on my skills by enrolling at Brookhaven Community College’s School of the Arts. There I not only studied art history and explored a variety of drawing and painting classes, but I also met fascinating people who were making the same journey as I was. We formed a group to show our work and have begun the dialog with the viewer, not just our fellow artists, friends and family. I like all the media, but oil seems to be my most expressive choice at the moment.

Art can be a little frightening because it exposes your vulnerabilities and allows others to see into your inner psyche. It allows me to express both my serious and whimsical sides and certainly satisfies my curiosity on many levels. I hope my work will provoke curiosity or humor in the viewer.
